Feed and Read Program
Feed and Read Program: One of AUN’s most ambitious initiatives, which gets to the heart of much of the poverty in the region, is the introduction of the Feed and Read Program. Feed and Read is a Yola-based program for vulnerable young children who are not in school. The program targets young Almajiri (itinerant Qur’anic Scholars) who have never been to school and adolescent girls who have dropped out of school.
The project provides one meal a day, and the children are taught basic personal hygiene, numeracy, and literacy at a cost of 2 US dollars a day. AUN students teach these children, and funding is provided by both donors and AUN faculty and students. The program has reached 1,500 almajiris who have acquired functional literacy and 350 out-of-school girls who have been supported to return to school. This program has been highly successful and the more designated money the university has, the more young people can reach. With $2 per day, the estimate is $60 per month for a 10-month program; you will pay $600 for one child.
- Cost $600 per child for an academic year.
